2017–18 SMCSU Executive Holds AGM

"SMCSU’s total revenue for this year equaled $154,842.43 while its total expenses came out to $107,300. SMCSU revenue is made up of carryover of unallocated funds from the previous year, the funds currently in the SMCSU savings account, and the annual levy it collects from all USMC students ($14 per semester, $28 per year)."

Queen’s Park Renovations Enter Phase One

"This plan, which began to take form in 2014, is to renovate and revitalize the historic park. Construction of phase one will be underway until October 2018, while phase two will begin in 2019. The plan includes a complete remapping of the walkways in Queen’s Park in an attempt to improve their structure. There will also be a paved walkway added around the perimeter of the park to replace the current path in order to create an easier and more accessible pathway for runners."

Cardinal Robert Sarah Visits USMC

"The lecture itself was delivered to over 1,200 people, which included those in attendance as well as those who livestreamed the event. David Sylvester Appointed New USMC President

"On March 1, 2018, Dr. David Sylvester was appointed the eighth President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC). Sylvester will take office August 1, 2018 and serve for a five-year term. He will succeed current USMC President and Vice-Chancellor David Mulroney, who completes his three-year term in July."

UPass Referendum Approved, Set For Late March

"As it stands, the offered fee is set at $322.50 per semester for unlimited travel on the TTC. This fee — for those unwilling to do the math — results in a rate of approximately $80.60 a month, a discount from the current cheapest rate offered by the monthly Metropass at $116.75. However, this rate could potentially go even lower. On March 20, a TTC board meeting will discuss the final offered price to UTSU, and they have established that the absolute maximum for Fall 2018 will be $80.60 per month."

U of T Joins University Climate Change Coalition

"U of T is one of 13 North American colleges that are a part of the University Climate Change Coalition, also known as UC3. UC3’s aims are to utilize their resources and allocate more funding on research, as well as to give more expertise to surrounding businesses, cities, and regions on how to implement research-driven climate solutions in their own backyards."

UTSU Forms Trans Commission

"The commission’s goals for the remainder of 2018 are to increase the amount of trans-centred programming and events on campus. “At the moment there isn't a lot of programming on campus geared specifically toward trans and gender non-conforming people,” said UTSU General Equity Director Jane Marston. “I suppose our goal ultimately is to make campus life for trans students a little easier and a little more welcoming, as that hasn't been the case really for the past couple years.”"

Their decisions include the approval of academic programs, budgets, employment policies, funding, student life, and tuition fees, among others."

Toronto Universities Found StudentDwellTO

"StudentDwellTO is a joint housing initiative between the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, York University, and OCAD University that aims to create more affordable housing for students closer to these campuses and in downtown Toronto as a whole. Toronto, where housing prices are becoming increasingly unaffordable for students with fixed incomes, has been struggling to find a way to create more housing options for these students."

U of T CUPE 3902 Unit 1, Collective Agreement Approved

"Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3902, Unit 1 approved the new collective agreement negotiators reached with the University of Toronto on February 8. The agreement was ratified with a unit-wide vote following the February 12 ascension meeting. The vote began following the meeting and ended February 16, with 86.1% voting to ratify the agreement."

UTSU ‘Know Your Rights’ Workshop Outlines Housing Law Concerns

"On January 29, the University of Toronto Students’ Union (UTSU) invited representatives from the Downtown Legal Services (DLS) to present on Housing Law as part of the “Know Your Rights” Workshop Series at the Multi-Faith Centre Main Activity Hall. The workshop walked listeners through the life cycle of a tenancy — from when you first sign a lease to when the tenancy ends."

A Lower Fee for a Ph.D.

"Formerly, international students at the University of Toronto (U of T) were charged $21,560 per session, which is a steeper levy than what most Canadian universities charge international doctoral students. However, from September onward, international doctoral students can breathe a sigh of relief because U of T is officially matching its international tuition with its current domestic tuition of $6,960 per session, a third of the previous price."

U of T's Mandatory Leave of Absence Policy: On Hold, For Now

"This policy was set to introduce a code-of-conduct–esque approach toward students with mental illness who exhibit behaviour that reaches the “threshold for intervention,” and was pulled from voting for the current semester due to student backlash and the request of the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC)."

CUPE 3902 Unit 1 and U of T Come to Tentative Agreement

"The tentative agreement was announced late last night, Thursday, February 8, via CUPE 3902’s social media accounts. It was reached with the help of a provincially appointed conciliator, and comes in advance of the Monday, February 26, strike deadline that was set at a union membership meeting in late January."
