The University of Toronto can often be isolating. Especially at a larger college like the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC), it can often be difficult to find a community. We here at The Mike are here to help with a few events happening on campus this month!
The Canadian Fine Press Exhibit is coming to Kelly Library on January 22, 2019, for the opening of the displays of letterpress publications, hand-printed ephemera, chapbooks, and other fine press works that will be available from January to May at the University of Toronto. Kelly is one of five locations across campus that will be featuring such work, with the release of the imprint A Tetrad for the opening night. Highlights of the event include opening remarks by USMC President and Vice-Chancellor David Sylvester and a lecture by Robert MacDonald on the instructive narrative to be gleaned from printropica, bibliophrenia, and typomania. This event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in 100 Alumni Hall and will mark the beginning of Kelly Library’s 50th anniversary commemorations.
On Friday, January 25, 2019, The Mike is hosting their student outreach event “January Jam.” From 12 to 2 p.m. in The Coop, Brennan Hall, there will be pizza, raffles, and a number of activities for students to partake in. Members of the masthead will be there to discuss the newspaper’s plan for 2019 as well as recruiting writers interested in student publication.
The skating rink in The Quad is not the only upcoming St. Michael’s College Student Union (SMCSU) event. On Wednesday, January 30, 2019, SMCSU is hosting “Bell Let’s Talk Day at USMC” in The Coop, Brennan Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Since 2010, Bell has taken the last Wednesday in January to support mental health initiatives by donating 5 cents for every applicable mobile and social media affiliated with Bell Canada and #BellLetsTalk. Accordingly, this SMCSU initiative aims to build community while helping erase the stigma surrounding mental illness. There will be hot chocolate, blue pancakes, fruit, treats, activities, and self-care tips.
On February 2, 2019, the USMC Lead 2019: Emerging Leaders Conference will be at St. Basil’s Parish from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Hosted by the Office of Student Life, this conference is for USMC students interested in leadership. Highlights include keynote speaker Dr. Andy J. Smith, a panel discussion with USMC alumni, student leader presenters Nicholas Rita and Kate Strazds. Lunch and snacks will be provided, no experience is required, and registration is free and open to all USMC students.
