Refresh your wardrobe with essential styles for back to school

Sabrina Daniele, Managing Editor

With summer far in the sunset, autumn brings a cool breeze, ensuring that we don’t sweat in our trendiest outfits. As busy students, we strive not only to become accomplished but to look that way as well. I want you to forget what you wore last season and find yourself reinventing your style for the new school year. Refresh your wardrobe with a few essential pieces this fall 2019.

Sweaters and sneakers

When you first think of autumn, what comes to mind? — sweater weather! That’s right, both tight and oversized sweaters, T-shirts, trench coats, and cardigans are not only super cute but downright fashionable. For bottoms to match, tailor-fitted leggings, jeans, or even jogging pants would be suitable.

To complete this look, the right shoes need to match. Luckily, you can never go wrong with athletic running shoes, specifically white or black. You heard me — wearing running shoes outside the gym is still a thing and can be a versatile wardrobe staple this fall. “Athleisure” describes this comfy yet fashionable look, and it is here to stay.

Yahoo! Finance conducted an investigation on the “Global Athleisure Market” from 2019 to 2023, and found “the rising adoption of athleisure wear by millennials … will further boost the athleisure movement market growth in the forthcoming years.”

“This market hasn’t slowed. Even after all this time, the big players [e.g. fashion businesses] and the smaller ones continue to expand,” Kim Karmitz explains in her interview with Forbes Magazine.

These findings are impressive — athleisure has revolutionized not only the way we dress, but it has transformed the future of the fashion industry as well.

The “office chic” look

Whether you work in an office or not, professionalism was never outdated. Key pieces to look trendy this season are the tartan print (plaid pattern), lined print, and polka-dotted print. This look has overlapped from this summer to this season. Most fashionably, these patterns would look best on dress pants and pencil/short skirts.

Growing in popularity this season are long-sleeve tops with puffy shoulders. This very sophisticated look can be paired with both dress pants and leather pants with heels or combat boots. Designer brands such as Kate Spade incorporate this style within their clothing lines. So if you want to achieve this look, many retail stores such as Zara and Nordstrom have you covered.

When in doubt, accessorize!

To accent your look, accessories can be added to enhance your overall appearance. Two new trends have emerged: silk headbands and scrunchie scarves.

These beautiful intertwined silk and detailed headbands perfectly accentuate any outfit for any occasion. How about scrunchie scarves? This emerged from last year’s 90s-inspired scrunchie epidemic. This year, a fashionable twist has arrived and we are all here for it! You can pair either your headband or scrunchie scarf with your hair up in a ponytail, braid, bun, or even with your hair down curled or straightened. Such pieces can be found at any retail store in the accessories section.

Make sure to stay in fashion this fall 2019! I look forward to seeing you all wear these new trends on campus this school year.
