Three great video games to try out
Kirill Logoveev, Staff Writer
When it comes to video games over the past two decades, there have been a lot of prominent titles. Although I haven’t played every game and have missed some popular ones, I present to you my top three video games of all time — games that I have played and loved.
As far as I’m concerned, the best video game of all time is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. For the minority of you that haven’t heard of this game, you play as a “Dragonborn” with a goal to defend the land from dragons and defeat their leader, Alduin. As you progress, you complete side quests that develop your character, making him or her stronger. Since its release in 2011, this game has shown why it’s one of the greatest games of all time: its storytelling ability and immersion into the fictional world makes it fun to play again and again, even for those who have mastered the game. It’s available on all platforms, including PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox X and S, and the Nintendo Switch. There’s also a VR version. On Steam the Special Edition of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is $53.49.
It’s hard to think of the first-person shooter gaming industry without thinking of Call of Duty. Although I missed Black Ops 2’s golden age, I can’t deny its greatness after playing the multiplayer, zombie, and campaign modes. This game’s addictive multiplayer, great campaign, and iconic zombies are what make it stand out from the rest. It was released in 2012 on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. On Steam its price is $80.99, speaking to the awesome legacy that this game has held up.
Completing my top three is The Last of Us. This game follows a broken father who has lost his daughter as he regains his humanity — after meeting a girl that fills the void the death of his daughter has created. This storyline happens as they fight off zombies in post-apocalyptic America. From the touching story to the fun and unique gameplay, this game has something for the casual enjoyer or the hardcore gamers who seek action. The only reason why this game isn’t higher up on my list is, without delving into spoilers, because I didn’t like parts of the ending. This game was released on PS3 and is now available on PS4, PS5, and PC. This game is $79.99 on Steam, but the PS4 disk is $38.95 on Amazon.
Creating any “greatest of all time” list will spark controversy, and I’m sure there are many great games that I haven’t played yet. But if you’re looking for a new game to try out during the winter break, you can’t go wrong with any of the ones mentioned above.
