10 items that make working remotely easier

- Comfy Clothes
When working at home, I have found that comfy clothes are essential. My go-to daily outfit consists of leggings and a comfy sweater, and since I am always cold, fuzzy socks and a throw blanket are also a must.
- Technology
When the days blend together it can be hard to stay organized. That’s why I’ve started typing all of the notes on my computer and saving them into a different folder for each course.
- Planners
Daily and monthly planners have been a saving grace for me for many years. I make my monthly planner using a Microsoft Word table and type in any assignments and tests from my courses for the month, as well as any additional online meetings or events. Based on that, I write a daily schedule for working and studying in order to meet those deadlines. This helps me to stay organized and have a clear idea of what I need to do each day.
- Snacks
Snacks help to keep me awake and focused on my tasks. My personal favourites include yogurt-covered cranberries with unsalted peanuts, frozen dried apricots, and trail mix.
- Study Apps
Since my days no longer follow a strict schedule, I use certain apps to help me manage my time. Pomodoro is really helpful in this area. The app set a timer for 25 minutes of study followed by a five-minute break. After completing four rounds of this, it will give you a one-hour break. This helps me to stay focused on my work, but it also gives me the opportunity to have scheduled relaxation points.
- Study Space
I have found it to be really important to have an inviting study space so that I don’t dread studying. I have happy memories as my screensavers, twinkle lights on my desk, scented candles, and knick-knacks that make me smile.
- Drinks
It’s very important to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially when sitting for long periods of time. I use a one-litre water bottle and I try to drink at least three of those per day. I also drink quite a bit of coffee throughout the day, contrary to the need to stay hydrated, in order to remain awake and motivated.
- Lap Desk and Back Rest Pillow
In addition to having a designated study space, I also like to do my work in a reclining chair or in bed. These give me the opportunity to study while stretching my legs and to give my neck more support. In both cases, a lap desk is a must when typing on my computer. When I study in bed, I use a backrest pillow to support my neck and back while working.
- Exam Study Essentials
Even though I type all of my notes throughout the year, when preparing for a test or exam I handwrite them. I find that this helps me to remember the information more effectively. I also colour code my notes, both typed and handwritten, because I find that helps to remain organized.
- Personal Time
Staying motivated throughout the day is very challenging for me. I have found that it is really important to have something that makes me happy to look forward to throughout the day. On some days I listen to upbeat music to try and get into a study mode. On others, I feel like I need a longer break, so I’ll watch an episode or two of one of my favourite shows.
