Music that can strengthen our faith in God
Sharon Lee, The Mike Contributor
Combining prayer with music and singing gives us one of the most powerful ways to express our faith. Over the years, I was able to learn many songs of worship that are loved by Christians of different ages. I know that many of us may have heard popular songs, such as “Oceans” or “10,000 Reasons.” While these are my all-time favourites, I instead compiled a list of some songs from my worship playlist that are lesser known but are still some of the best Christian songs I’ve heard. The YouTube link to each song is included with my descriptions so you can check them out in your own time!
- “Way Maker” by Leeland
I instantly loved this song the first time I heard it. The song’s lyrics praise God for who He is, making it the perfect worship song. Its melody is also very soothing and enjoyable, which was why the song immediately caught my attention. The original version is sung by Sinach, but there is something special in the voice of Leeland’s lead singer that helped their cover gain popularity.
- “Best Friends” by Hillsong Young & Free
This song is featured in Hillsong Young & Free’s latest album, All Of My Best Friends, which was released earlier this year. It doesn’t sound like a typical worship song, but more like a regular pop song that you might hear on the radio. It tells the message of finding joy and comfort by following God instead of living up to the stereotypes that society expects from us, and one method of doing this is to attend youth group gatherings at church. From my experiences, youth groups provide the best types of people who help me get through all aspects of my life.
- “World Outside Your Window” by Hillsong Young & Free
This is another song by Hillsong Young & Free and yes, it’s from the same album. Although the album is filled with great songs that are unique in their own ways, this song as well as “Best Friends” are my two favourites. “World Outside Your Window” sounds like an introduction song that the artist would sing at the start of a concert and it has a refreshing feeling to it. When the pandemic is over, I’d love to hear this song live.
- “Even When You’re Running” by Casting Crowns
The lyrics of this song resonate with me, especially the ones in the chorus, “His love is inescapable His presence is unshakable.” The song sets a reminder that no matter where we are in life, even if we’re going through hard times, we don’t need to be afraid because God will always find us and be by our sides.
- “No Longer Slaves” by Bethel Music
This is another song whose lyrics resonate with my life. Throughout the song, the singers repeat the words “I’m no longer a slave to fear / I am a child of God.” These words remind us of what the Church has taught us, which is to turn away from sin by following in the footsteps of God. Like “Even When You’re Running,” the lyrics in the bridge of this song tell us to trust in God because He will help us during hard times.
That’s it for my list! Some honourable mentions I would like to include are “Clean” by Hillsong United, “I Shall Not Want” by Audrey Assad, and “Never Stop” by Urban Rescue. Enjoy the music!
