A recap of recent events on campus

January was a busy month at the the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC). As the new semester begins, many students are preoccupied with reacclimating to an academic environment, adjusting to a new set of courses, and attempting to navigate the labyrinth that is social life at the University of Toronto (U of T). It is easy to forget that student-oriented events are being held regularly on campus. In light of this, The Mike is here to provide a recap of some of the recent events held on campus, along with a preview of the USMC formal: Cirque de SMC.
Bell Let’s Talk Day
Bell’s annual awareness campaign for mental health went stupendously thanks to the USMC commuter dons, who organized the event at USMC and served blueberry pancakes to help “beat the winter blues.” Also at the event, the IUSCA (Italian Undergraduate Students Cultural Association), U of T Charity Fashion Show, Healing Sounds of Music, USMC Mentorship, and the University of St. Michael’s College Student Union (SMCSU) all contributed by hosting activities to help drum up awareness for mental health and spread awareness of on-campus mental health resources. In addition, food was supplied in the Coop for hungry scholars. In addition, Good2Talk (a non-profit organisation) “provided information for both on-campus and off-campus services.”
USMC Formal — Cirque de SMC
The crown jewel of the USMC calendar, the Formal Event, Cirque de SMC is on the horizon, taking place on March 23. This year’s theme, as the name alludes to, is based on Cirque de Soleil. According to SMCSU, acrobats are expected to perform to accompany a “three course dinner, music, and dancing.” Ticket sales begin next week and cost $40 for USMC students and $50 for guests. Tickets are limited, so get them fast to take part in this circus-inspired fun! SMCSU advises students to stay updated through Facebook to not miss this sure to be jubilant event.
SMCSU Skating Rink
A fan of hockey or looking to get back in shape after this recent hibernation? The SMCSU ice rink is open — depending on conditions — from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Sunday, with the exception of Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., where the rink will only be open for shinny. Students will, in addition, be able to book the rink for their own events. SMCSU will also be hosting skating nights every other Friday, where hot chocolate and snacks will be served. According to SMCSU Vice President of Community Affairs Charlotte Ashton, a three-on-three hockey tournament is in the works, and anyone interested is encouraged to message SMCSU.
Impact Month of Service
The goodness of USMC is on display this month as the Impact Month of Service continued on February 3. USMC students helped by preparing care packages for the homeless, went on a “homeless feeding patrol,” and visited the Rekai Elderly Centre. The impact was felt throughout the neighbouring Toronto communities as the homeless were cared for and fed, and the elderly were visited and kept company.
