Getting more involved at the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC) can seem difficult. Don’t know where or how to get started? The Mike is here to highlight some meaningful events for commuter students. With dogs, free food, and games, there’s something for everyone! Check out a highlight of each upcoming event below.

A Recap of the Wellness Day Event

The Wellness Day Event was co-hosted by the St. Mike’s Residence and Commuter Dons and the St. Mike’s College Student Union (SMCSU). Activities included physical stress relief, creative expression, and therapy dogs. This event took place October 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Coop to give students a study break from upcoming midterms.

“Wellness Days happen more often than you might think,” said Marcella van Run, one of the SMC Commuter Dons. “There will be plenty of opportunities throughout the semester to come meet the therapy dogs, and plenty more to get free food—free food somehow always finds its way to the centre of our events.”

The upcoming Wellness Day is scheduled for October 23rd, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Halloween Fest

On October 31, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. USMC Commuter Dons will be hosting an event in the Coop to celebrate the Halloween season. The event will include games and snacks starting at 4 p.m., with a scary movie from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to end the night’s festivities.

Pancakes and Waffles

On November 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the annual pancakes and waffles event will be taking place in the Coop. Students can drop by to get free pancakes and waffles from the Commuter Dons.

Commuter Christmas Dinner

Looking for a way to celebrate the end of the first semester and the upcoming holiday season? The USMC Commuter Dons will be hosting a catered Christmas Dinner as part of the annual tradition to celebrate the end of the semester with other fellow commuter students. The event will be taking place on December 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the St. Basil’s Parish basement.

A Sense of Community

This year, our SMC Commuter Dons have taken on a special theme: “Home Away From Home”. The Commuter Don office, located in the Coop, is adorned with cookbooks, potted succulents, a comfy couch, and a Nespresso machine. The Dons host weekly office hours and are always eager to meet new students; they encourage you to come by, say hi, and treat yourself to a free espresso.

“For commuting students, feeling at home at St. Mikes can take time,” says van Run. “It can be difficult to find that sense of community when your college is really only relevant to you administratively. As Commuter Dons, we want St. Mikes to be more than just the registrar for students who don’t live on campus; we want everyone to be able to come out to our events and office hours, and hopefully through these means, come to get to know St. Mikes, the Coop, and other commuting students.”

New events are always being planned. Stay tuned for more to come.
